„Our Circle Is Vicious“ ist gerade offiziell veröffentlich worden, wie fühlt sich das an?
Ja, das fühlt sich wirklich gut an, weil wir so lange an diesem Album gearbeitet haben. Wir haben so viel Zeit und Arbeit in das Schreiben der Songs und das Aufnehmen gesteckt, dass es wunderbar ist, endlich ein fertiges Album zu haben.

Das Album ist von Kurt Ballou von Converge produziert worden und es ist euer zweites bei Deathwish Records…hat euch das in irgendeinem Maße beeinflusst?
Bjorn: Nicht wirklich aber es war das erste Mal, dass wir in Amerika aufgenommen haben und das war ein riesengroßer Unterschied. Nun waren wir wirklich in der Lage mit Kurt zusammenzuarbeiten und er hat so viele gute Ideen und so einen großen Einfluss auf uns, dass er uns richtig dazu gedrängt hat, das Album so gut wie möglich zu machen. Es hilft sehr, dass Kurt, wenn man mit ihm zusammenarbeitet, genau versteht auf welche Art von Sound du hinauswillst und er sieht genau, was für ein Paket aus Musik und Text du möchtest.
Also hat er euch nicht in irgendetwas reingeredet und ihr konntet machen, was ihr wolltet?
Genau, wir haben gemacht, was wir wollten.

Wurdet ihr den während des Aufnehmens von anderen Bands beeinflusst?
Von vielen Sachen…weißt du ich glaube diesen Bands nicht, die behaupten, von nichts und niemandem beeinflusst zu werden. Ich finde, das ist einfach nicht möglich. Man ist immer von ungefähr allem, was man hört, beeinflusst und manchmal realisiert man das gar nicht. Egal, was du hörst, es wird irgendeinen Einfluss auf deine Musik nehmen. Was unser neues Album angeht, kann man merken, dass wir immer noch gewisse alte Sachen mögen, aber auch ein paar andere Dinge und ich denke, das erklärt, warum unser Album so geworden ist.
Also gibt es keinen speziellen Bands?
Ach, es gibt immer ein paar, aber ich nenne sie nicht gerne. Wenn ich ein oder zwei nenne, stecken uns alle wieder sofort in eine Schublade.

Wenn man euer Album vor dem Releasedate bestellt hat, hat man einen Downloadlink bekommen, um die neuen Songs direkt als .mp3 zu haben. Wieso habt ihr euch dafür entschieden?
Das war eine Idee von Deathwish aber ich finde die ziemlich gut, weil so viele Leute schon total gespannt waren und sie aber so lange warten mussten, bis die finale Version fertig war. Auf diesem Weg konnten sie die Songs direkt hören und sie auf ihre MP3-Player packen, was ja sowieso jeder macht.
Ich habe „Our Circle Is Vicious“ auch bestellt, aber noch nicht erhalten und im Endeffekt hätte ich sie mir jetzt auch hier kaufen können…
Ja, das ist kacke. Das hätte alles schon vor einer Weile fertig sein können, aber Deathwish Records ist gerade sehr beschäftigt, wegen der ganzen Preorders der neuen Converge Platte. Das ist ziemlich viel, ich meine bei uns ist das auch viel, aber bei denen sehr viel mehr, weil die schließlich viel bekannter sind. Hinzu kommt dann auch noch das Doomriders Release…Man könnte sagen, dass sie deswegen etwas hinterher hinken.

Was für eine Bedeutung hat der Titel des neuen Albums?
Es gibt viele verschiedene Bedeutungen und das ist einer der Gründe, warum wir genau den Titel ausgesucht haben. Weißt du, für uns heißt er irgendwas Bestimmtes und für andere Leute dann etwas ganz Anderes, das macht das Ganze interessant. Die offensichtlichste Bedeutung ist für mich, dass das Leben ein Teufelskreis ist. Du entstehst aus einem Nichts und kommst auf diese Welt und irgendwann stirbst du und verschwindest wieder. Es gibt aber noch andere Möglichkeiten, zum Beispiel könnte man den Teufelskreis als eine bestimmte Gruppe von Leuten, Freunden, als eine Band oder was auch immer sehen. Ich denke genau deswegen finde ich, dass das ein guter Titel ist.

Ungefähr das Gleiche gilt auch für eure Lyrics: Wenn man sie durchliest, scheint es so, als müsse sich jeder selbst darauf einen Reim machen, was sie bedeuten. Hinzu kommt, dass du immer sehr depressiv wirkst…Gibt es den trotzdem eine bestimmte Botschaft, die du euren Fans näher bringen willst?
Also eigentlich sind die Texte nur eine Wiedergabe von dem, was ich fühle…
Dann muss dein Leben aber sehr mies sein…
Nein, nicht wirklich! Das Leben an sich ist einfach eine komische Sache für mich. Es hat Höhen und Tiefen und es ist nie dasselbe – das gilt auch für die Lyrics. Ein paar von ihnen sind wütend und auf einen bestimmten Aspekt des Lebens, den ich nicht mag, fixiert, aber die meisten der Songs handeln wirklich von meinem Inneren. Ich schreibe über mich selbst, die Dinge, die zu mir gehören, die ich ändern will oder wo ich sehen möchte, dass sie sich in der Zukunft ändern. Weil die Texte nur diesen einen Teil von mir wiedergeben, würde ich mich nicht als depressiv bezeichnen. Weißt du, wenn ich fröhlich bin, schreibe ich keine Songs. Wenn ich mich gut fühle, bin ich wahrscheinlich irgendwo draußen, um mit meinen Freunden oder mit meiner Familie was zu trinken oder irgendwie sowas. Normalerweise schreibt man Texte, wenn es einem schlecht geht, man wütend ist oder etwas unbedingt loswerden möchte – zumindest ist es bei mir so!

Was hältst du von “God Free Youth” und Veganismus, zwei Einstellungen, die typische Merkmale der Hardcoreszene sind?
Die Leute denken manchmal, dass wir eine Band sind, die Gott und generell Religion hasst, aber das tue ich gar nicht und ich hasse auch keine religiösen Bands. Es gab schon immer Hardcore Bands, die spirituell waren und das auch herüberbringen wollten, wie zum Beispiel die Cro-Mags. Das stört mich nicht, ich möchte nur nicht, dass es normal wird, dass organisierte Religion den Hardcore beeinflusst. Es stört mich auch nicht, wenn Leute an Gott, Jesus oder was auch immer glauben, viele Menschen tun das schließlich und das ist nicht wirklich schlimm, aber ich mag diesen organisierten Aspekt davon nicht. Ich möchte nicht, dass Hardcore Shows zu einer Art Kirche mutieren, wo dann jeder sagt „Tu dies, tu das, andernfalls wirst du bestraft und kommst in die Hölle“. Ich hasse so eine dumme Scheiße und ich hasse, was Religion manchen Leuten antut. Manchmal leitet es Menschen dazu, mit dem eigenen Denken aufzuhören und das ist das, was ich hasse. Aber die Tatsache, dass Menschen glauben und nach irgendetwas Höheren im Leben suchen, das ist doch ganz normal. Ich denke jeder fragt sich, warum wir hier sind und dergleichen. Ich denke, dass diese „God Free Youth“ Organisation ein bisschen extrem ist, aber ich kann verstehen, woher diese Einstellung kommt.
Die Hardcoreszene sollte immer verschiedene Einstellungen zulassen und es sollte Leute geben, die sehr stark von etwas überzeugt sind, zum Beispiel auch vom Kommunismus oder Veganismus. Es ist gut, viele verschiedene Ideen da draußen zu haben, denn genau das macht Hardcore interessant. Es sollte allerdings nie eine Regel für alle gelten.
Hardcore hat Platz für viele Einstellungen, solange jeder für sich selbst denkt!

Euer neues Album wird von den Kritikern und Fans geliebt, ihr seid bei Deathwish unter Vertrag und seid auf der ganzen Welt auf Tour. Gibt es trotzdem noch etwas, was du erreichen möchtest?
Ich würde mal gerne eine Show mit Slayer spielen. Es wäre einfach total cool, mal eine total verrückte und große Show zu machen, die keiner von uns erwartet.
Es gibt auch noch ein paar Orte, die ich gerne mal sehen würde. Wir waren nie in Asien oder in Südamerika, das würde mich mal reizen. Aber wir kommen bald nach Australien und wir sehen so viele verschiedene Städte und Länder, dass ich froh darüber bin, was wir bis jetzt erreicht haben. Ich denke mir nicht „Oh mein Gott, du musst noch unbedingt diese eine Sache machen“. Ich bin einfach glücklich, wie die Dinge bis jetzt gelaufen sind und möchte in Zukunft gute und laute Shows spielen, denn das ist das Einzige, was wirklich wichtig ist.

So “Our Circle Is Vicious” has been released now, how does it feel?
Yeah, it feels good because we worked on the record for like a really long time. We put a lot of time and effort into writing the songs and then recording. It feels good that it is finally a finished album.

“Our circle is vicious” was produced by Kurt Ballou from Converge and it’s your second Deathwish album…were you influenced by that?
Not really…It was the first time we recorded in America so that was a pretty big difference.Now we were able to really work together with Kurt and he has a lot of good ideas and a lot of influence and he really pushed us to make the record as good as possible. When you work with Kurt he really understands the kind of sound you’re going for and this helps a lot. He sees the music and the lyrics as the whole package you want.
So he didn’t talk you into something and you could do what you want?
Yeah, we did what we wanted to.

Were you influenced by other bands when you were writing this album?
By a lot of things. You’re always like…well I don’t really believe bands when they say they are not influenced by anyone else, I mean it’s just not possible. You are always influenced by almost everything you listen to and sometimes you don’t even realize it. Whatever you gonna listen to it always gonna have some kind of influence on the music.
With our new record you can tell that we’re still into a lot of the same things that we were before but also a lot of different things so I think that explains why our album is that way.
But there aren’t any specific bands?
There’s always a bunch but I don’t really like to name them because if you name one or two bands the others will be like “oh yeah”.

Why did you decide to give out this instant download one received immediately after preordering your LP?
It was actually a Deathwish idea but I find it’s a good idea because those people already baited for the record but they had to wait for the actual final to come in, so that way they could preorder but already have the record straight away and put it on their MP-Player like everybody does anyway…
We preordered it and still haven’t received it yet; maybe we should have bought it here.
Yeah, that sucks. It could have been ready for a while but right now Deathwish is really really busy because they have preorders for the Converge record and that’s a lot. And then our record, it’s a lot, too, but not the same as Converge because they obviously are a lot bigger and then there’s the Doomrider’s release, too, so that they may be a little behind on the packages.

What’s the meaning of the title?
They are different meanings to the title – that’s also one of the reasons why we wanted it to be that way. You know to us it means a certain kinda thing but to other people it could mean something else. That’s what makes it interesting. The most obvious meaning of the title is how life is a vicious circle in itself. You’re born out of nothing into a world and then you’ll die the same way and you kind of disappear. That’s the most obvious meaning behind it but there are other ways to see it, too. You can see it as a certain group of people, a group of friends, a band or whatever. It could be other things, too, so that is why I think it is a good title.

Well, the same goes for your lyrics: If you’re reading them it seems as if everybody needs to decide for oneself what they are about and you always seem pretty depressive…is there still an important message you really want to convey to your fans?
It’s just that the lyrics reflect the way I feel…
So your life must be pretty miserable…
No, not really!
Life is kind of a weird thing to me. It goes up and down and it is not always the same and the same goes for the lyrics. Some of the lyrics are angry and focused on a certain aspect of life I don’t like but most of the songs really deal with me. I write about myself and about the things that belong to me or the things I’d like to change or I like to see change in the future. I think the lyrics gonna help me to deal with it and to face who I am. So I wouldn’t call myself depressive because it only reflects that specific part of me. You know when I’m happy I don’t really write songs. When I’m feeling good then I’m probably out drinking with my friends and family or something like that. It is usually when you don’t feel good or when you feel angry and you have something to get off your chest then you’re gonna write lyrics or at least that’s when I write lyrics.

What do you think about this whole God Free Youth and Vegan thing that has become typical of the hardcore scene?
People sometimes think that we’re a band that hates God or hates religion but I don’t hate it and I don’t hate bands that are religious. You know, in hardcore there were always bands that were very spiritual and had a spiritual message, for example Cro-Mags had it. I don’t wanna see organized religion infiltrating Hardcore and I don’t want it to become a normal thing. I don’t care if people believe in God or in Jesus or whatever. I mean a lot of people believe in that and it’s not really a bad thing but I don’t like the organized aspect of it. I don’t want Hardcore shows to become like a church where everybody is like “say this, say that” and otherwise you’ll be punished or you go to hell. I hate stupid bullshit like that and I hate what religion does to people. It kinda stops people from thinking for themselves and that’s what I hate about it. But the fact that people believe or look for something else in life like higher powers that’s a normal thing. I think everybody is a bit looking for the reason why we are here and so on…That’s not really the bad part of it. I think God Free Youth is a little extreme but I can see where it comes from because it’s a reaction to these religious aspects. I think the hardcore scene should always allow different opinions and should have people that feel very strongly about let’s say other things like communism or veganism whatever. It is good to have different ideas out there and that is what makes hardcore interesting but there should never be one rule for everyone. Hardcore is a place for many ideas as long as people can think for themselves!

Your new album is loved by critics and fans, you’re signed to deathwish and you’re touring round the world…is there still something you want to reach?
I’d like to play a show with Slayer, it’d be very cool to play a really crazy and big show nobody expects us to do. There are also some places I’d like to go to, we have never been to Asia or South America for example. I don’t know it very well but it would be good if we could go there. But we’re coming to Australia soon and we’re seeing a lot of places so I’m happy with what we’ve reached so far. I’m not like “Oh my god, we really have to do that”, I’m just really happy with how things went so far. I just wanna play good, loud shows and that’s all what matters really.
