Interview mit The Casting Out

Ines: Es muss ziemlich nervig sein, andauernd mit Boysetsfire verglichen zu werden, aber denkt ihr, dass es euch auch hilft, bekannt zu werden?
Nathan: Es hilft wirklich sehr. Am Anfang hat es geholfen, weil Leute deswegen daran interessiert waren, was wir machen. Aber nach ´ner Zeit wird es wirklich nervig. Wir sind eine andere Band, wir sind neu, wir brauchen den Vergleich eigentlich nicht.
Jack: Wobei es natürlich stimmt, dass viele Leute uns wegen BSF kennen.
Nathan: Wir werden andauernd gefragt, was der Unterschied zwischen BSF und Casting Out ist. Hast du die Frage auch auf deiner Liste?
Ines: Nee.
Nathan: Okay, highfive! Also im Moment stören uns diese Fragen nicht, aber ich denke, wenn das nächste Album kommt, wollen wir die nicht mehr hören, dann ist das doch schon lange her.

Ines: Wie habt ihr euch denn alle kennen gelernt?
Nathan: Jack…kenne ich einfach, weil er auf den BSF Shows war. Chris und Lee waren BSF Roadies…
Ines: Ach, schon wieder Boysetsfire.
Nathan: Ja stimmt, aber es ist wahr.
Jack: Die will gar nichts mehr über BSF hören, lasst uns über Casting Out reden. (lacht)
Nathan: Ähm ja…also Pat war einfach ein guter Freund von mir! Habe ich irgendwen vergessen? Ich denke nicht.

Ines: Ihr hattet mal eine Frau in der Band. Warum ist sie nicht mehr bei Casting Out?
Nathan: Darby hat bei uns Keyboard gespielt, aber dann ist sie mit ihrem Mann nach Kalifornien gezogen, wir hatten dann kurz einen anderen Keyboarder, aber wir haben gemerkt, dass das gar keinen Sinn macht bei den neuen Liedern, wir brauchen kein Keyboard mehr.

Ines: Was möchtet ihr mit eurer Musik herüberbringen? Gibt’s irgendeine besondere Message?
Nathan: Eigentlich ist es nur Spaß. Generell wollen wir nicht zu tiefgründig werden. Wir wollen einfach Spaß haben und Musik spielen, die hoffentlich anderen hilft, ihre scheiß Jobs zu vergessen. Die Leute sollen zu unseren Shows kommen, tanzen und ihre Sorgen vergessen. Einfach Spaß haben!

Ines: Was ist das Beste am Musikerdasein?
Nathan: Ich bin kein Musiker (lacht). Das soll Jack beantworten!
Jack: Es ist wie eine Flucht vor der Realität. Wenn du auf Tour bist, verlässt du dein wahres Leben und du kannst alle Probleme vergessen, obwohl sie noch existieren. Wir sind seit drei Wochen auf Tour und haben einfach Spaß. Es ist wirklich wie eine Flucht vor der Realität des Lebens.
Nathan: Es ist, als wäre man drei Wochen durchgängig betrunken, auch wenn du auf Tour nichts trinkst. Wenn du betrunken bist, hast du zwar Probleme, aber du vergisst sie. Genauso ist es, auf Tour zu sein! Jack trinkt nicht, also hab ich das jetzt mal für ihn zu dieser Analogie verpackt.

Ines: Wenn ihr „Deutschland“ hört, was fällt euch ein?
Nathan: Meistens, dass ich gerade in Deutschland bin.
Jack: Ich mag deutsche Leute.
Nathan: Ja, Deutschland ist gut, Deutschland ist cool.
Jack: Bretzel…
Nathan: Stimmt, Bretzel sind auch gut!

Ines: Habt ihr irgendwelche deutschen Lieblingsbands?
Nathan/Jack: Beatsteaks, definitiv.
Nathan: Versuche gerade noch andere Bands zu finden…
Jack: Ich weiß nicht. David Hasselhoff?
Nathan: David Hasselhoff?! (lacht)
Jack: Der ist doch hier voll bekannt oder nicht? Ist er deutsch?
Nathan: Nein, überhaupt nicht. Der hat vielleicht höchstens einen deutschen Hintergrund. Ne, aber ich denke, dass Beatsteaks wohl die beste Band sind, die ihr hier habt.

Ines: Was habt ihr euch für die Zukunft vorgenommen? Wann kommt das neue Album?
Nathan: Die Zukunft besteht im Moment einfach nur aus Touren. Wir sind so viel es geht auf Tour mit dem Album. Wir schreiben aber auch schon an neuen Songs, wir performen heute Abend sogar einen! Wenn wir irgendwann zu Hause sind, werden wir weiter an den neuen Liedern arbeiten… Lass mich überlegen. Ich würde sagen im August und September sind wir auf Tour in den USA. Wir hoffen, dass wir im November wieder hier sind und…wo war ich jetzt?
Jack: Dezember…
Nathan: Ach genau, also ab Dezember werden wir dann weiter an Songs arbeiten. Ich hoffe, dass nächstes Jahr dann unser neues Album kommt, vielleicht so im Sommer.

Ines: Okay, das waren alle Fragen, ich bedanke mich fürs Interview!
Nathan/Jack: Danke, kein Problem!

Ines: It has to be kinda annoying to be compared with Boysetsfire all the time but do you think that it is also easier to get well known because of Nathan’s BSF history?
Nathan: It definitely helps to an extent. In the beginning it helped to having people be interested in what we’re doing. After a while it gets kinda annoying of course. We’re a different band, we’re something new, we don’t really need the comparison really.
Jack: Yeah, a lot of people check us out because of Boysetsfire.
Nathan: “What’s the difference between bsf and casting out”- it’s been an interview question for many times. Do you have that question on your list?
Ines: Noo.
Nathan: Okay, highfive! So you know, right now we’re doing fine with these questions and stuff, but I think by the next record we don’t wanna hear it anymore, it gets pretty old.

Ines: How did you all get to know each other?
Nathan: Jack…I just get to know him through coming to BSF Shows, Chris and Lee just were Roadies from Boysetsfire…
Ines: Boysetsfire again
Nathan: Yeah, you know, but it’s true that’s our work.
Jack: She’s getting tired of it a little bit. She wants to know something about Casting Out. (laughs)
Nathan: Yeah, well Pat was just a friend of mine. Am I missing anyone? No, I don’t think so.

Ines: There was a woman in your band at the beginning, why isn’t she a part of The Casting Out anymore?
Nathan: Darby used to play keyboards and then she moved with her husband to California, we got someone else to take her place at first but then we realized that it didn’t make any sense with the new stuff, we don’t need a piano anymore.

Ines: Were there any highlights in your career so far?
Nathan: Playing in general, I mean…
Jack: Anytime when we’re somewhere people sing along, it’s pretty awesome.
Nathan: We haven’t had any show yet that we haven’t had a lot of fun at!

Ines: What do you want to convey with your music? Is there any special message?
Nathan: It’s just fun. I mean in general we don’t try to get too deep. We want to have fun and play music which hopefully helps people in forgetting their shitty jobs.
You come in, dance around, be stupid and have fun, you know.

Ines: What’s the best thing about being a musician?
Nathan: I’m not a musician (laughs). I’ll give it to Jack.
Jack: It’s like an escape from reality, really. You kind of leave your life. Even though all the stuff still exists you don’t really have to worry about stuff at home because on tour everything’s ok and you can forget about it. We have fun, We’ve been on tour for three weeks now and it’s really an escape from the reality of life.
Nathan: It’s like being drunk for three weeks, even if you don’t drink on tour. Because when you’re drunk you still have problems but you forget about it. So is touring, definitely. (laughs). Jack doesn’t drink so I put it for him in drinking analogy

Ines: When you’re hearing “Germany” what comes to your mind?
Nathan: Mostly that I’m in Germany.
Jack: I like German people.
Nathan: Germany’s good. Germany’s cool.
Jack: Bretzels. …
Nathan: Yeah, Bretzels are good, too.

Ines: Do you have any German favorite bands?
Nathan/Jack: Beatsteaks, definitely.
Nathan: Trying to think of other bands…
Jack: I don’t know. David Hasselhoff?
Nathan: David Hasselhoff (laughing hard).
Jack: He’s really big in Germany, isn’t he? Is he German?
Nathan: No, he’s not German. No, no, no. Maybe background. Well… Beatsteaks are probably the best you have here.

Ines: What are your aims for the future? When’s the new album coming?
Nathan: The future right now is just a lot of touring as much as we can with the album. Actually we’re writing some things for the new album, too. Once we get home, we’ll work on it. I would say August/September we do a lot of touring in the us. We hope to come back here in November after that…Um I lost train…
Jack: December…
Nathan: Ah yeah. December/January we’re writing a lot of songs and everything. Hopefully it will be next year when the new record is coming, summer probably.
